Dental Hygiene
and Teeth Whitening
Dental Hygiene
Dental hygiene is professional teeth cleaning that removes plaque, tartar and pigmentation. The result is not only healthier teeth, but also the return of their natural color.
Regular dental hygiene helps prevent tooth decay and gum inflammation. The main cause of these conditions is microbial plaque, which can only be removed mechanically through proper oral hygiene and professional treatment.
If plaque is not removed thoroughly, bacteria accumulate in it, causing unpleasant issues that may lead to a dental visit.
Why Is Dental Hygiene Important?
The most common consequence of insufficient oral hygiene is gum inflammation (gingivitis). It appears as:
- swollen gums
- sensitivity
- bleeding
If the problem is not addressed, it can progress to a more serious stage: periodontitis. It causes:
- bad breath
- gum recession
- loosening of teeth
- damage to bone and tissues around the tooth
Inflammation of the gums can also affect overall health. Bacteria can enter the bloodstream and are associated with diseases such as:
- diabetes mellitus
- cardiovascular diseases
- rheumatoid arthritis
How Often Should You Have Dental Hygiene?
The recommended interval is once every 6 months. More frequent treatment is recommended for:
- patients with gum disease
- patients with increased tooth decay
- cardiac patients
More frequent treatment is recommended for patients with gum disease, increased tooth decay and cardiac patients. Treatment length is individual, usually 40-60 minutes depending on the condition of the teeth and visit regularity.
